A plucked half-tube zither instrument, the koto (Zheng) is the national instrument of Japan. As with the Chinese zheng and se, it is similar to the Mongolian yatga, the Korean gayageum and ajaeng, the Vietnamese *àn tranh, the Sundanese kacapi and the Kazakhstani jetigen. Paulownia wood (Paulownia tomentosa, called kiri) is used to make koto, which measures approximately 180 centimeters (71 inches) long. The most common type uses 13 strings strung over movable bridges for tuning, with different pieces possibly requiring different tunings. Kotos with 17 strings are also common, and they serve as bass instruments in ensembles. A koto string is generally plucked with three fingerpicks (tsume), worn on the right hand's first three fingers.
